Troop 849 started their long term backpack at Log Cabin High Adventure camp. They hiked cross country for 8 days, climbing several peaks. The highlight of the trip was climbing Mt. Conness. This entailed an approach hike before dawn, a traverse of a glacier, a rock climb up a steep shoot, and several long rock scrambles, some with severe exposure. It was a 14 hour day !  Troop 966 wanted to finish their John Muir trail award, but several scouts were going to collage soon, so their long term backpack was 2 sections of the trail; over 100 miles in 2 weeks. They climbed Mt. Banner, .. and Half Dome. They were prepaired for snow and ice on Banner so they carried ice axes, ropes, and harnesses for the first week.  The Kopack Gorge national wilderness area of the colorado river is a favorite of canoe trips. Typically it is a 2 day paddle, with some trips including a practice day first.  Rock climbing is great fun and adventure at Joshua Tree National Park. There are literally thousands of routes in a dozen main areas. LAAC HAT has instructor training for adult leaders. The routes vary from class 4 to 5.14's. Typically scouts are challangened by 5.2 - 5.8's. These are plentiful near both single and group campsites.
