Each requires 6 hours of work

 

Jim Spencer Conservation

This UNIT award is for 1000, 2000, or 5000 hours of work. It is cumulative over the unit, starting in 1980.

Climbing Awards

Rock Climbing

1. complete 2 climbs on real (outdoor) rock

2. complete either 2 rappels or 1 rappel AND 1 downclimb (Scouts)
2. complete 2 downclimbs (Cubs, Webelos)

Weekend Backpacking Awards

  • Take an overnight backpack of at least 7 backpack hours
  • The campsite and > 1/2 the hike must be in a National Forest
   Training Hike  Take an overnight backpack of at least 5 miles

  • Take an overnight backpack of at least 7 backpack hours
  • The campsite and > 1/2 the hike must be in a State or County Park
   National Park / Monument  Take an overnight backpack of at least 7 backpack hours
   Snow Hiking
  • Take an overnight backpack of at least 5 miles (round trip)
  • There must be SNOW on both the trail and campsite
  • At least 2 meals (supper & breakfast) must be prepared in camp
  • Earned 2 weekend awards AND Snow Camper award (from Desert Pacific Council)
  • Scouts must be > 12 years old
  • One adult must have completed the BSA Winter Camping Travel Training
   Gabrielino
  • Earn 2 Training Hike awards in the prior 12 months
  • Trail and Campsite must be in the Angeles National Forest
  • Complete 12 hours backpack hours over a minimum of 3 days / 2 nights
  • Perform 6 hours of conservation work within 90 days of hike

 

Long Term Backpacking

  • Complete 1 of 2 specified routes
  • Scouts must be 14 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 6 days
  • Patch "High Sierra Trail" patch is awarded with first segment patch
  John Muir Trail Award
  • Consists of 6 separate awards, one for each segment
  • Complete a backpack of 7 days
  • Scouts must be 12 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 5 days
  • Must start and end at location indicated on patch
    Golden Bighorn Trek 
  • Trip starts AND ends at Angeles Oaks per a designated route. Trip is 53 miles, 7000 foot gain (33 backpack hours)
  • Scouts must be 12 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 5 days
   Mountain Explorer  
  Sierra North
  • Complete a backpack of 25 backpack hours
  • Scouts must be 14 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 5 days
  • Trip must be in specified area
   Sierra South
  • Complete a backpack of 25 backpack hours
  • Scouts must be 14 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 5 days
  • Trip must be in specified area

  • Complete one of 3 specified routes: Chantry Flat to Vincent Gap, specific trail near Silliman Crest or Sugarloaf Valley
  • Scouts must be 12 years old

  • Trip must be in specified area
  • The medal is earned by completing the patch, then completing 12 hours of conservation work
   Explorer Mountaineering
  • Backpack 50 miles
  • Scouts must be 14 years old
  • Earn 2 weekend awards within 90 days of hike start
  • Min of 5 days

 

Peak Bagging Awards

   Mini Peak bagger

 Climb 8, 16, 24 peaks listed in the Hike Aid.:

  • max of 2 per day, 3 per outting
  • 6 hours of conservation work (per award)
  • pick up trash from campsite and trail
  • recommended 2 hours of work/study/scout
  • skills during the outting
   Peak bagger

 Climb 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 peaks listed in the hike aid. Note that these are listed by graduated level of difficulty from A to F.

  • Earn 2 weekend backpack awards prior to starting these peaks.
  • Max of 1 per day and weekend
  • Max of 3 per longterm
  • pick up trash from campsite and trail

  • Complete a long term (50 mile, 5 night) adventure: backpack, aquatic, bicycling, ski touring.
  • Perform 6 hour conservation project on public land
  • Complete two additional day/weekend High Adventure Outtings:
    • Aquatic
    • Bicycle Tour
    • Overnight Backpack
    • Rock Climbing
    • Cross Courntry Skiing
    • Show Shoeing
  • all must be completed between 2007 and 2010.
